"This Night Has Opened My Eyes" #2 Patricia Ariel
Mixed media, (oils, acrylics, paper) on panel 4"x6"
Walking on streets, at stores, and other places where we would see other humans, in the absence of smiles or other facial expressions, the eyes became the most prominent sign of humanity. Sometimes we would try to touch each other with a brief gaze - or avoid it, maybe afraid we would be saying too much. In isolation, deprived of touch, making eye contact gained a different meaning. It became communication and communion. Words from The Smiths’ songs, and their frequent themes of loneliness and longing sounded like the perfect way to frame those silent dialogues.
